About Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Ganesha — remover of obstacles, patron of beginnings, scribe of the Mahabharata. Worship on this day dates back to the medieval era, but the public, civic version of the festival was reshaped in 1893 by Bal Gangadhar Tilak in Pune as a way of bringing Indians together across caste during the freedom movement. Today Mumbai's Lalbaugcha Raja pandal alone attracts millions over ten days.

Clay murtis of Ganesha are installed at home or in neighbourhood pandals on the first day, worshipped with modaks (his favourite sweet), and on the tenth day — Anant Chaturdashi — carried in noisy, joyful processions to the sea or river for visarjan, the immersion that returns the god to formlessness. In recent years eco-friendly clay murtis have replaced plaster of Paris ones in many cities.
